This week, we shared a toothbrush. This is thanks to one of us forgetting to pack our own on our travels. It's one of the many ways we still swap spit. Marital bliss or not, the world keeps moving, so let's get to ***The News***. --- ### **The Gloria Gap** GloriaSteinem died this week, and if we lose one more celebrity, this blog risks becoming an obituary. Steinem rose to fame for her undercover journalism work, although under less cover than you might think, when her first big gig was at the Playboy Club. Steinem had glasses cool enough for a man and a perspective that would have been pissed at me for saying that. G.L.O.R.I.A. is best known as the leading voice of the second-wave feminist movement, and in her death, reminds us that women's coffins shouldn't be 77% the size of a man's, just because their bodies are statistically speaking. According to one source, her grave marker is being etched right now with the words "Sir, my tombstone is up here." May she rest in peace, even if the generation of women behind her knows the work is not done yet. ### Clancy Meeting You Here In the **Lindsay Clancy trial**, the jury is deliberating, as they have so far been at an impasse. Lindsay is on trial for killing her kids while in the throes of postpartum psychosis, using exercise bands, by the way, adds one more use to the list of things people do with exercise equipment that is otherwise sitting around. According to reports, she also had laundry hanging on her treadmill as well. Perhaps this only contributes to why America is split on the topic of her case, along with the jury, because everything seems to get political these days. Some on the left say that Clancy does not *identify* as a murderer, so you shouldn't call her one. On the right, they're against Clancy not just because she killed her kids, but because she did something without her husband's permission. The Defense, led by a real-life Matlock, has pointed out that a real-life Barney Fife did the investigation, which has made the case both complicated and interesting. The Judge has urged the jury to come to a verdict and avoid a mistrial. For example, he pushed back on calling the war with Iran a (quote) war (end quote), because it does not exhibit the characteristics of a war, except for the deployment of thousands of soldiers, the presence of battleships, the firing of missiles, the name of the department in charge of it being called the "Department of War" and the deaths of 18 American soldiers and many more Iranian soldiers and civilians. He also said that he did not "have sex with a couch" and that the separation between the two cushions does not actually "cause chafing" if you "do it right." Bond Market Lots of people are talking about the bond market these days, and in particular, how the Trump Administration is handling it, since conditions have been shaky in recent weeks. Since this is a complicated financial product, many struggle to understand it, so I wanted to break down how bonds work in language anyone can understand. When investors fear the cyclical headwinds are not abating, accretive to earnings, and they believe the thesis has compressed, they look for alpha generation opportunities to put some dry powder on the balance sheet with a capital balance that is more compelling. The obvious alternative investment is a stress-tested model with managed downside scenarios because tail risks are mitigated. Obviously, when guidance is conservative, we can all have conviction on this thesis, because this raises the midpoint of capital allocation, so that the technical setup looks constructive. So if you strip out X, whatever X may be in your case, you'll want to pivot your strategy, so obviously bonds could make sense in one scenario, but not in others.
