How to crash Facebook, and make the perfect Old Fashioned.

Hey Friends,

I took a couple of days off and went to Bourbon Country this week, so since I’ve got whiskey on my mind, I’d like to teach you how to make the perfect Old Fashioned. I’ve illustrated each step to help you out.

What else happened this week? The debt ceiling went up and Facebook went down. If you’re in marketing, like me, Facebook’s blackout probably disrupted your workflow so you live-tweeted Facebook’s downtime.

There’s more about this in the news.

Hot Takes

Week 40 of 2021

The week’s most important news and links to a “reputable” source.

  • Facebook crashed. Along with its properties like Instagram and WhatsApp, the social giant became socially distant on Monday. CEO, Mark Zuckerberg was already under pressure due to the anti-trust lawsuit against them. During the brief outage, it was reported that Facebook employees were relegated to communicating by email, phone, and various forms of talking in person. (more)
  • Then there was the Whistleblower. Unfriended Facebook employee Frances Haugen testified before Congress on Tuesday that Facebook does cyber bad things for “astronomical profit”. In her testimony, she briefly mentions the outage, tagging Facebook for dramatic effect. Congress liked her comment. (more)
  • We’re pausing abortion lawsuits for now. A federal judge has blocked the Texas Abortion law on Wednesday, saying this argument is getting old. The law will still have to work its way through the courts to see if 2021 is the new 1971. (more)
  • Pfizer dropped off some news. Studies have confirmed recipients of the Pfizer vaccine show waning immunity over time, even though it still prevents major infections and death. Vaccine-hesitant activists are quoted as saying “see!”. Vaccine advocates are quoted as changing the subject. (more)
  • The Debt Ceiling is up-ish. Dems and Repubs agreed to raise the roof just a little so that they could bump their arguments out to a December 3rd deadline. The money chat, likely taking place this Thanksgiving over turkey and mashed potatoes, positions both parties with an excuse for not coming to family gatherings. (more)

That’s it for the news. Here’s The Gist

If you are one to imbibe, with a penchant for spirit-forward beverages, you’ve undoubtedly heard of this drink.

In this week’s article, I explain how to make the perfect Old Fashioned. I include tips on tools, preferred ingredients, and step-by-step instructions complete with illustrations.

How to prepare for the weekend

The basics are this:

  • Use quality tools and ingredients.
  • Use my time-tested 3-3-3 recipe (bitters, sugar, and rye whiskey).
  • Don’t muddle fruit. Don’t shake it. Do stir.
  • Use big ice cubes to stir and bigger ice to serve.
