When Better Is Worse
The Source of our turmoil and the source of our relief.
Hey Friends,
I'm dreading the cold weather.
Thanks to the thinnest skin of any newsletter writer I know, I'll be wearing layers for the next few months, so please blame all typos on the fact that I'll be writing this newsletter with gloves on.
Let's get to The News.
Hot Takes
This 42nd Week of 2024
Sin War
The top Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar, has achieved the ultimate goal of being killed by his enemies and without winning any ground in Gaza. According to early reports, he’s currently in the afterlife asking for directions to his 72 virgins, only to find out he misheard the word "surgeons."
Sinwar, through his invasion of Israel, prompted the deaths of 42,438 people in Gaza, giving Israel an excuse to pull the trigger. This reminds us that wars based on ideology have no end, and it doesn't matter which side you are on. You lose.
Let this be a lesson to us. Don't be Yahya Sinwar, and don't be Benjamin Netanyahu either. We can only hope that this presents an opening for a peace deal.
Tru Crime
Justin Trudeau accused India of killing a Canadian Sikh activist, and we couldn’t be more appreciative of how Canadian Kind he was in saying so. I would have pictured him saying, 'Perhaps we can discuss the matter or the murder you may have committed if you wouldn't mind.' but according to the article, Trudeau took a firm but still Canadian stance.
Officials in India took offense, calling Trudeau's remarks a naan starter. (more)
Keep Kamala and Move On
This week, Kamala sat down with Brett Baier from Fox News for an unfriendly interview, giving her a chance to speak to the most misinformed public on earth. Most news outlets said that Brett "interrupted her repeatedly" in a "contentious interview," but Kamala held her own. I would argue that her going under such scrutiny is a must. Brett didn't make it easy, but he was fair. You can view the whole thing here: (more)
Peach Polls
Georgia's voters are showing up in record numbers, which is not exactly a win for fascism, but with Trump's rally cry for a landslide "too big to rig," perhaps he'll get exactly what he wants in Georgia, even if early voting statistically favors Democrats. (more)
Altar Boys
The boys will be ringing a different bell this week after the Archdiocese of L.A. agreed to a landmark settlement for thousands of sex abuse claims. I nearly dropped my incense when I heard the figure of $880 million. (more)
One Direction: Down
Liam Payne from the boy band One Direction fell from the third story of a hotel, and tragically, for him, that direction was down. Liam was known for hits like "What Makes You Beautiful" and "Story of My Life." We'll close with a tribute to Liam here.
That's it for the news. Here's this week's feature.
When Better is Worse
As the election approaches, we all have to decide: do we want our favorite tax plan wrapped in rat poison, or do we want to elect a law-abiding citizen who might hand the right-to-life argument to the women putting theirs on the line to create it?
If you’ve read these pages before, you know I don’t like the poison pill. When a felon says that anyone who doesn’t support him should be prosecuted and suggests using the military to contain them, I tend to look for other places to put my vote.
Policies aren't worth a bucket of warm piss* in the hands of a crazy man. If the military threats and aimless meandering weren't enough, Trump's signature dance move only serves to solidify his crazy. He looks like he is flossing with a giant piece of string to dislodge the remains of a Quarter Pounder with Cheese from his capped teeth.
But it gets worse. Trump started his first campaign with the saying "lock her up," and when he entered office, he tried to get his own DOJ to prosecute his opponent, Hillary Clinton, despite the lack of evidence there was a crime. Then, after losing an election, without evidence he attempted to overturn the authority of State Governors and, with it, the election.
But we'll have enough politics to enjoy over the next two and a half weeks. Before we forget what matters most in life, I thought I'd remind you with one of my favorite pieces. Good Source Material.
I originally posted this as a paid piece with a preview, but I'm feeling especially generous today. You can always leave a tip if you consider it valuable or upgrade to paid if you want to make it last all year.
So when the news is not good, choose better source material.
That's it for this week.

Have a great weekend!
